Key inclusions
Robin Risser earned the third goalkeeper spot after being voted Ligue 1’s best goalkeeper at Lens. The 21-year-old edged out Alphonse Areola (only 8 appearances in 2026 for West Ham) and Lucas Chevalier, who hasn’t played since January for PSG. A late Hugo Lloris return was reported as “never considered” by the coaching staff.
Rayan Cherki was selected after a standout season at Manchester City, providing creative depth behind Olise and Dembélé. Maghnes Akliouche of Monaco makes his first major tournament squad, rewarded for his Ligue 1 form.
Randal Kolo Muani took the ninth forward spot over Jean-Philippe Mateta of Crystal Palace. Deschamps values Kolo Muani’s versatility across all three attacking positions and his 9 international goals.
Notable omissions
Hugo Ekitike was ruled out before selection with an Achilles tendon rupture sustained during PSG’s Champions League match against Liverpool. Ferland Mendy was also ruled out through injury, opening the left-back depth to Lucas Digne alongside Theo Hernandez.
Jean-Philippe Mateta was the closest outfield omission after scoring consistently for Crystal Palace. Deschamps opted for Kolo Muani’s international experience. Pierre Kalulu (Juventus) and Maxence Lacroix (Crystal Palace) were also on the preliminary list but missed the final cut.
Tactical outlook
Deschamps plans a 4-2-3-1 system, marking a shift from the more conservative 4-3-3 used in Qatar. The double pivot of Tchouaméni and Kanté (or Camavinga) provides defensive cover, while Mbappé leads the line as a central striker with license to drift left.
The attacking midfield three behind Mbappé — Dembélé (right), Olise (center), and Barcola (left) — offers pace, creativity, and goal threat from multiple angles. Zaïre-Emery’s ability to cover right-back gives Deschamps tactical flexibility late in matches.
The center-back pairing of Saliba and Konaté (or Upamecano) is among the most athletic in the tournament. Full-backs Theo Hernandez and Koundé provide width and crossing ability.
Group I outlook
France faces Senegal, Iraq, and Norway in Group I. Norway, led by Erling Haaland in his World Cup debut, is the most dangerous group opponent and likely decides who wins the group. Senegal brings physicality and knockout experience from 2022. Iraq is making a rare World Cup appearance and is the group’s biggest underdog.
France should progress as group winner or runner-up. A Round of 32 match would likely come against a third-place qualifier, with tougher knockout paths opening after that.
